Set it and Forget it: The Powermat Wireless Charger

What’s the worst part about having several different electronics? Charging them, of course. Every gadget has its own charger and input jack, and each one can take up an entire outlet. And isn’t there always one device that’s impossible to plug in correctly? It’s never been so burdensome to be technologically hip. That is, until the Powermat wireless charging station was invented. The Powermat allows users to set their cell phones, MP3 players and handheld gaming devices all on one site to be charged without the use of cables. It sounds like magic, but it’s just innovative technology.

The Powermat works through the use of the unique mat, an AC adaptor and what’s called a “Powercube.” All you have to do is plug the adaptor into the wall and place your device onto the mat. There is a small catch, however. The devices have to be equipped with Powermat cases so the mat can detect them. The Powercube comes into play if your device does not have a supported case. You can buy Powermat cases for the following devices:

  • iPhone
  • 2nd Generation iPod Touch
  • iPod docks
  • Nintendo DS lite and DSi
  • BlackBerry Bold, Pearl, Curve 8300 and Curve 8900

The Powercube must be utilized if your device isn’t one of the products listed above. The Powercube comes with a three-inch cable and seven different jacks for plugging into your device. The Powercube sits on the mat with the other devices; you plug your unsupported gadget into the Powercube, allowing it to charge.

The Powermat recognizes when a device has been placed upon it and emits a sound to signal attachment. In addition to the sound, an indicator light turns on. Both of these indicators can be customize through an option menu. The Powermat also comes in a portable version, but the only difference between the two is the portable version folds into a carrying case.
